Speed and Agility Training is more complex than mimicking a few “How To” social media videos. Let’s define Speed and Agility to better understand the purpose of the training. Speed Training is the ability to achieve maximum velocity (speed in a given direction). Agility Training is the ability to rapidly change direction without the loss of speed, coordination, balance, strength, or body control. Training to build a foundation of balance, core strength, full body synergy with fundamentals will assist in this process. Understand they are separate processes. A “fast” athlete” doesn’t automatically mean an athlete is agile or can effectively change direction without loss.
Muscular strength is the ability to generate the maximum amount of muscle force. Muscular endurance is the ability of a muscle to repeatedly exert force against resistance. A lot of emphasis is put on muscular strength but not often enough an emphasis on muscular endurance. Both are extremely important to the game of football but in terms of agility, muscular endurance tends to be a key factor for failing fundamentals after repetition (3rd/4th Qtr.).
ATL Football is hyper focused on fundamental movement with proven speed and agility techniques, effective, proper placement of arms/hands/legs/feet and the reduction of wasted movements. Long-term repetition of these movements will instill a mind-muscle connection needed to achieve effective agility. Without effective agility, speed becomes irrelevant.
